Abdominal Ultrasound Cost

How much does an abdominal ultrasound cost? Well, it certainly depends on where you are doing it, the availability of radiologists, if you want it done and reported and if you need the scan in 2 or 3-D.

Abdominal Ultrasound Scan Showing The Liver

Generally, the cost for an ultrasound scan of the abdomen ranges from anywhere between £95 to £375, privately in the UK and $100 up to $1200 in some Centers in the USA.

On the NHS in England and Wales, abdominal ultrasound price is based on an agreed National tariff price plus the prevailing Market Force Factor or MFF. That means that the cost of abdominal ultrasound scan in London for example would be different from that in Colchester or Cardiff.

A routine non obstetric abdominal scan in Chelmsford NHS hospital for example costs £45 plus the prevailing MFF, as at off 2013 / 2014. The same scan would cost about £125 at St Batholomew's Hospital, London.

Of the diagnostic scans used in identifying organs in the abdomen, abdominal ultrasound scan is the least expensive. It is quick to do, gives real time results and it is non-invasive - no needles or knives involved.

You do not also need to go into a tunnel to have an ultrasound done - an experience that many who are claustrophobic  find most terrifying.

The Purpose of Abdominal Ultrasound

With the rising cost of scans, it is very important to be clear on what the purpose of an abdominal ultrasound is for.

The most common reason why your doctor may send you for a scan in this part of your body is to help him or her understand the cause of a swelling or fullness in your abdomen or the presence of an unexplained abdominal pain.

An ultrasound scan of the abdomen is usually used in taking a close look at the:

  • Liver to help with identifying liver disease like fatty liver or alcoholic liver disease or cirrhosis
  • Gallbladder to check for gallstones or excessive thickening of the wall of the gall bladder especially if you are suffering with a right upper abdominal pain
  • Kidneys to determine it's size, or texture or the presence of kidney stones, or tumour
  • Pancreas to check for cysts and tumours or inflammation like pancreatitis
  • Spleen
  • See if there are abnormal accumulation of fluid in your abdomen (ascites)
  • Check for hernia on the wall of the abdomen
  • Ascertain the integrity of the wall of the large blood vessels in the abdomen like the aorta
