Hi, I'm 13 and and I have some problems with my weight. I'm 5 foot 5 and I weigh 13 stone 11 pounds. I got weighed today in a pe lesson as the teacher wanted to see how healthy we were.
I have not been weighed since I was 5 so I didn't know what to expect. She said that with my weight and height I am morbidly obese. Is she right? Or am I just overweight? Also I don't know if this has anything to do with my weight but recently I have been getting these incredibly sharp pains in my breasts.
They last about 30 secs and sometimes reduce me to tears. I can't particularly pin point the source of pain it just feels like it's all over my breast. I know you might think it's growing pains but I have had growing pains I know 100% these are not growing pains. I know I should go to the doctors about this and my weight but it's really embarrassing so even telling my mum would be hard.
If I did then what would they do? And I get nervous as I think if I get weighed in front of a doctor then he might judge me and say oh gosh she's fat! So what do think these pains might be?
There is a history of breast cancer in my family. And if I went to the doctors what would he do? Would I he/she have to look at them? Thanks.
Hello Megan,
It's Dr. Edema here, from www.abdopain.com.
Thanks for contacting us, and well done for finding a place to "voice" your concerns. I must let you know that you've done very well.
Now. On your weight issue, please take it from us, YOU ARE NOT MORBIDLY OBESE! Given the details of your height and weight (Weight 193 Ibs and height 5'5, your BMI was calculated to be 32.1. Please see the definition of obesity here at this website: http://www.whybeobese.com/definition-of-obesity.html
For one to be morbidly obese, the BMI has to be above 40! So do not feel that bad.
It is a good thing that you are keen on achieving good health, and balance weight. Do not feel embarrassed. Deal with it now. Speak with your parents. They would understand and appreciate your efforts. Also see your doctor. Depending on what is available locally, there are government sponsored free programs that can help with weight control.
On the breast pain, it is very likely to be a passing pain. Why not see the doctor to examine you and then be able to come up with a position.
I hope this helps.
Please do not hesitate to contact us again, should you have any further concerns.
